Sha'arei Shalom Synagogue
|
Who are we? Sha'arei Shalom:North Manchester Reform Jewish CongregationWe are a Reform Jewish Congregation, a Constituent of the Movement for Reform Judaism (Reform Synagogues of Great Britain) our parent body. Our Hebrew name, Sha'arei Shalom is translated as "Gates of Peace."
Historically, from a nucleus of 10 founding families we have grown and changed into a living community of over 250 members. We offer a real living Judaism with the opportunity to express a love of religion in a meaningful way for the 21st century. You will find us situated in multi-functional, purpose built premises in the centre of Whitefield Our services are conducted by our Rabbi or by experienced capable lay readers to celebrate Shabbat and all occasions as appropriate to the Jewish calendar. Men and women are not separated in prayer, allowing families to pray together in an atmosphere of decorum and tranquillity. SocialOur Social Committee and the Synagogue Guild provide functions to cater for all tastes throughout the year. Whilst providing an excellent environment for the shul members to get together and enjoy themselves, these events also help considerably with their fund raising efforts. Synagogue GuildOur Synagogue Guild organize regular functions, arrange jumble sales and bazaars for our members entertainment and, usually, to raise vital funds for the synagogue. They also arrange Kiddushim and provide superb catering for many of our catered social functions in conjunction with the Social Committee. Function RoomThe Synagogue's multi function hall with large fully equipped kitchen is available for hire. Charges are £50 per hour for members, £60 per hour for non-members. (Minimum hire 4 hours.) Contact the Synagogue Office for details. NewsletterA regular newsletter, "Shalom," distributed to all member families keeps everyone in touch with all activities, events and services. It also, of course, provides an essential outlet for all of the shul gossip, and is a vital way of keeping in touch with members who we might not otherwise see very often. Visitation and WelfareWe care deeply about the welfare of all of our members, whether single or in a family. To this end, our Rabbi keeps abreast of all members who need help and visits. It helps the Rabbi if members keep the Office Administrator advised of any member known to be in need of his services. BurialWe have a plot of land consecrated as a Jewish Cemetery with an on site Ohel, situated in the Municipal Cemetery at Gigg Lane, Bury . All members pay a small annual charge which ensures that all necessary arrangements are made as the need arises. Contact Brian Fink or Louis Weiner in case of a bereavement. |
