Twinned Shul

Community Twinning Arrangement

Sha'arei Shalom Synagogue,        twinned with                  Kehilat Har-El,

    Whitefield, Manchester                                                Jerusalem

                England                                                                          Israel

In 2006, our two congregations, Sha'arei Shalom Congregation in Manchester and Kehilat Har-El in Jerusalem decided to formalize their friendship and "twin" their two communities.

קהילת הר־אל

Kehilat Har-El was Israel's Pioneer Progressive Reform Congregation founded in 1958 by a small group of Jerusalemites, originating from many different countries and all walks of life, led by the scholar and philosopher Prof. Schalom Ben-Chorin.

The son of Prof Ben-Chorin was Rabbi Tovia Ben-Chorin who was instrumental in the formation of the Sha'arei Shalom Congregation in North Manchester in 1977, so it was almost inevitable that the synagogues should be twinned.

The two communities plan:-

  •  Visits*by members of each congregation to be hosted by their "twin" opposites.

(*If visitors alert the Twin Shul of their intended visit in advance they'll be assured of a warm welcome)

  •  Pen Pal friendships between the children of each community.

  •  Bnei Mitzvot at the Southern Wall of the Temple in Jerusalem or at Massada .

  •  Exchange of Congregational Newsletters.
